What is Onyx?
Onyx is a type of chalcedony, itself a form of microcrystalline quartz. Onyx has straight, nearly parallel bands or layers of color, allowing skilled gem carvers to cut the material and create reliefs and intaglios with extraordinary depth and contrast. It is been used in many jewelry, like replica VCA 5 motifs bracelet.
Some mineralogical reference materials consider onyx to be a type of agate, itself a type of chalcedony. According to these sources, the term “onyx” should refer to black, brown, or white-banded agate or to agate with solid bands of light and dark.
Alternatively, other sources (including IGS) suggest that both onyx and onyx are banded varieties of chalcedony. Only onyx having concentric or curved bands and onyx having straight or nearly parallel bands. These distinctions hold regardless of the color of the strips or layers.
Of course, in either case, onyx is still chalcedony, both as a variety and as a sub-variety.
Onyx makes for a durable jewelry gemstone. They have a durometer rating of 7, which means they are resistant to scratches from one of the most common dangers of daily wear: household dust. Cleavage-free, tough, and resistant to chips and physical blows.
